It looks a lot better than my first Microsoft Flight Simulator back in 1986....and better than FS2000. Eye Candy is nice, but it is not so important as "immersive". I am glad that after so long, specially ASOBO have put so much effort. Nice vid, still see some old school glitches and graphics from 2000.....in 2020? Doubtless many MSFS fans have wondered why some videos look a lot more realistic than others. This often has to do with the source of the data, which generally falls into three categories or combinations thereof: handcrafted, photogrammetry, and autogen. Handcrafted is modeled in a 3D program (like Blender, Maya, or 3DS Max) and is usually reserved for a few selected airports. One of the reasons that this video looks so real is that this is one of 341 areas in MSFS that has been scanned by photogrammetry, not the more common autogen, which attempts to reconstruct the scene from satellite imagery using AI algorithms (handcrafted buildings and other items are often used in this regeneration). However, not only are satellite images restricted to one optimum angle due to orbit constraint and the increased thickness of the atmosphere at other angles, but they very limited in resolution due to diffraction (there is a practical limit to the diameter of the camera lens on the satellite which must be at least 550,000 feet away to avoid burning up in the atmosphere, usually a lot more). The best resolution available commercially is about 25 to 30cm (about 1 foot). Clearly, the AI software must use its noodle to fill in the blanks. The process is far from perfect. Photogrammetry uses images taken from different angles by airplanes. The images are much sharper due to the much closer distance of the camera, with larger lenes possible. There can be shots from many different angles, giving the software a lot more information to reconstruct the 3D model. In areas with closely spaced tall buildings, drones are sometimes used instead. The lens diameter is smaller, but they can be closer and can take photos from angles not feasible from an airplane. Photogrammetry made from conventional 2D images often has limitations in model accuracy due to weaknesses of these very tricky algorithms (there are several), but the growing use of depth cameras (which can measure distance) is quickly improving the results. Lidar scanners are now frequently used to augment the textures from the photos. Not all photogrammetry is created equal. These scans are done by different people with different equipment and varying levels of experience. Slowly, flight simulators are turning into flight replicators. These are not simulations, but scans of actual terrain, and are potentially capable of producing results indistinguishable from reality, because, in effect, that is what they are. How long it takes for this to translate from research papers to people's computers is a matter of time, money, and market resolve. Three of the better quality photogrammetry-scanned cities in MSFS are Miami, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale. Even this video has issues. Notice that North Venetian Drive and the islands it connects do not transition to the (CGI) water correctly. The houses on these islands better be sure that their flood insurance is paid up. Future versions of MSFS need to improve both water and vegetation. MSFS fans who want the best results can benefit from researching where the best data has been collected, and how to enable and optimize photogrammetry.
